There are very few things more frustrating than getting Cop Blocked. Sometimes you’re at a perfect ledge in Boston and you have a plane to catch, so you can’t come back tomorrow. Sometimes you know that switch heel is coming next try and you just need a few more minutes. But it’s in that decisive moment where the masters distinguish themselves from the laymen and skate heroes are born.
Guys like Moses Itkonen and Mike Vallely built reputations for not backing down if a security guard got confrontational. Greco, Bam, and countless others have wrestled their boards away from security on tape. But the true heroes go a step further. Where predecessors showed their disregard for authority by fighting or bickering with them, these guys simply skated through the human skate stoppers and won.
RAGDOLL – Slaughterhouse
You could argue that this clip spawned a generation of kids who act like shit heads around security – it was that cool. Not only does Ragdoll do the trick (in perfect form) right next to the cop, but throws in a little unnecessary birdy at the end for good “punk rock” measure. Sure, people have always been skating around or through security guards to get their trick, but very few were so perfectly captured on tape that this one almost felt like a set up.
MILES SILVA – 1947
I’m not entirely sure Miles even saw the dorky-ass security guard walking up the steps. It sounds like the crew was trying to warn the guy, but he’s kinda not watching where he’s going and here comes Miles at full speed! Oh no! But after seeing a precision nollie inward heel blast inches from his face, even the guard had to admit, “It was pretty cool, you guys.”
SATVA LEUNG – Welcome To Hell
America has this… “thing” with religion. It gets people all weird and touchy. Most people like it in theory more than in practice. Case in point, anybody with a passing familiarity with the Bible would think it’s ridiculous for a servant of Jesus Christ to threaten a stranger with God’s wrath. Dude’s going to be so bummed when he dies and gets reincarnated as a rat or handrail or something.
KYLE WALKER – No Other Way
I think I’m noticing a trend here among angry pedestrians: Old? White? Religious? Seems familiar!
CLINT WALKER – Modern Art
Some people need pressure to perform at their highest level. I myself get jello legs – and if I’m in bed – I’ll surely lose my boner. But Clint Walker apparently deals very well with the added stress of a “fine, one more try” scenario. Here’s a prime example: a gnarly grind while the cops wait for them to pack up and get the fuck out.
NEAL MIMS – Feedback
It’s one thing if a security guard is in your way and you have to swerve around and dodge him to get your trick, it’s another if the dude is actually swatting you away like a fly while you are in the middle of grinding a Hubba. Although he technically doesn’t land that specific try, we’ll give it to him for sheer recklessness and almost breaking this dude’s face with his front truck / catching charges for assault with a deadly weapon.
DANE BURMAN – Cold War
It’s almost too good to be true. He has to SHOVE the dude OUT of his way so he can SHOVE the board OUT of his back lip. How often do you get wordplay in a skate clip? Somebody went to film school!
ED TEMPLETON – Jump Off A Building
Another classic skate video moment: Someone I assume is a resident or property manager is trying to tell Ed to get the hell off “his handrail” or whatever. Ed is having NONE of it, responding with a quick, “I’m sorry, I don’t speak French.” And while homeboy stands dumbfounded, presumably thinking, “French? Who is this asshole?”

Dane Burman was the first one to come to mind when I saw this. I think that Tempster clip might be from Jump off a Building, but I’m not sure! <3
