Welcome back, lurkers, to the next installment of Office Picks! We decided to take a little break from the Picks last month because we were already overhyping ourselves on the Vol. 2 book, but now we’re back and more full of ourselves than ever. And to try to keep things from going stale, we replaced the “Ashamed of…” category this month with some actual skate related picks.
(For the stragglers, see our earlier Office Picks.)
So check out our May 2018 picks, you might even find something here more important in your life than Jenkem (as crazy as that may seem).
Listening to…
Prefab Sprout
Catchy British ’80s synth pop that never made it big across the pond. Use them in your next skate vid and really chuff some right sods, pip pip, english tea, etc.
Reading…
The World of Edena – Moebius
Beautiful, massive, otherworldly graphic novel from the ’80s. Seriously, it’s beautiful, just Google it. It’s. Fucking. Beautiful.
Watching…
Crashing
A tall, goofy-ass struggling comic stumbles around the NYC comedy scene and somehow happens to come across every single well-known comedian within the last decade.
Brewing & Pooing…
Halo Top cookies & cream ice cream
It’s 320 calories for a whole pint of ice cream. Sure, it doesn’t taste as good, but I can house half the tub and not feel like a piece of shit. Summer’s around the corner, time to get svelte.
Skate Part You’re Watching…
What Youth: Fairly Normal – Andrew Allen
Idk if this counts as a skate video, more like a profile, right? Whatever. Its cool, very chilled aesthetic makes me think I should be living on the west coast where the livin’s e z.
Listening to…
“My Heart” – Donnie and Joe Emerson
Powerful psych-soul recorded in a log cabin by two teens back in ’79. I discovered these guys from two different “covers” (Hype Williams and Ariel Pink) of another one of their haunting songs, but “My Heart” is my favorite.
Reading…
The Death of Ivan Ilyich – Ivan Tolstoy
A sad novella from that guy who wrote some of the greatest novels I’ll never get around to reading, The Death of Ivan Ilyich gets under the skin of a dying man and makes you feel the grief and despair of a life wasted in convention.
Watching…
Phantom Thread
A quiet masterpiece on toxic relationships, curses, and couture dressmaking. This movie lingers in your soul long after you’ve let the credits roll.
Brewing & Pooing…
Cuties Mandarin Oranges
These delicious natural gushers are only in season until May, so get ’em good and juicy while you still can.
Skate Part You’re Watching…
Danny Garcia – Habitat Mosaic
Love everything about this part, especially how they run the last few tricks back a second time. Castrucci channelling DJ Drama.
Listening to…
A Very Fatal Murder – The Onion
With actually good shows like Criminal and Serial (season 1), the world doesn’t need another true crime podcast. That’s why The Onion made A Very Fatal Murder, a parody true crime podcast to spoof them all. Read more of my shitty opinion here.
Reading…
Skateboarding LA – Gregory Snyder
What do you get when a sociologist, a former pro skater, and a bunch of sweaty teenage boys walk into a bar? This book. Written by Shorty’s Aaron Snyder’s brother to understand how Aaron still works in skating after not being pro for years.
Watching…
Atlanta – FX
Sometimes I think Atlanta is an amazing, narratively wandering take on modern sitcoms. Other times I think it’s overrated and doesn’t care to tell a story. Either way, I devour every episode.
Brewing & Pooing…
Bacon-y Baby Kale
People love to shit on kale, but it can be tasty. Whenever I make bacon I leave the grease in the pan and throw in a couple handfuls of baby kale leaves to cook down. Easy way to add vegetables to your crappy diet.
Skate Part You’re Watching…
Vincent Huhta-Hasselberg – Green
Jenkem gets a lot of video submissions and unfortunately we can’t post all of them. This guy stood out because of his care-free, gangly style. Yes, his afro is a little dork, but he could become the next hot Euro skater, yah.
Listening to…
Three 6 Mafia – The End
I wanted to skate to “Money Flow” off this album when I was 15 but I would never have been able to film 4 solid minutes of footage then. Still can’t.
Reading…
Sorry.
Just don’t have the time!
Watching…
Michelle Wolf at the White House Correspondent’s Dinner
LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL.
Brewing & Pooing…
Blueprint’s Blueberry Hibiscus Tonic
If you have a sensitive stomach but want to eat greasy foods and need some stability in your life, this stuff works wonders and is actually pretty tasty.
Skate Part You’re Watching…
Donovon Piscopo – Nike SB Chronicles Vol. 2
While watching pre-World Cup friendlies and the Champions League finals, I got to thinking about how much I miss the Nike SB Lunar Gato (OG colorway only). Donny’s part pretty much introduced them to the world and the world needs them back. Predicting a special World Cup colorway.
Listening to…
“ABCs of New York” – Princess Nokia
Got hyped when I saw a video of her throwing soup on some racist guy in the subway.
Reading…
The Dubliners – James Joyce
I wish I read this when I was younger.
Watching…
Westworld
It takes me like two hours to get through an episode because I always miss the most important part of the scene. But the acting and the writing is phenomenal.
Brewing & Pooing…
Scrambled Eggs and Cucumber
Fry the cucumber and some garlic in the pan before the eggs. Add some salt, pepper, and hot sauce, and you’re good.
Skate Part You’re Watching…
Jake Johnson – Short Ends
Been watching this too much since I saw the new Cons video.

Apparently that subway racist was a skater who slammed on his head a few too many times. Sounds like a Lennie Kirk type situation.
