In an effort to educate ourselves and any other skateboarders who don’t qualify for “O.G. New Yorker” status, we’re visiting some of the city’s most iconic spots with local skate historians and asking them to walk us through the timelines of these architectural blessings. What we came up with is a new series on the “Evolution of…” New York City’s skate spots.
For our fourth installment, we headed to The Bronx to visit the Jerome Ave. Banks. The spot is made up of five giant stair sets in a row (but only four are actually skateable), with crusty ass banks on either side. We hit up Aaron Herrington, who was one of the first people we saw skate the spot in his Static IV part, to tour the neighborhood and share stories about what’s gone down there.
These banks are not buttery, even for seasoned crust hunters. They’re riddled with broken glass, dog shit, and general NYC street muck. The fact that no skaters (that we know of) have come away from this spot with tetanus or hepatitis is a lowkey miracle.
Absorb some spot history in the video above and yell at us below if you’ve got a spot you want us to profile. (Just make sure it’s not only available in THPS.)
