Welcome to the latest episode of ~PARTS~, our series where we take a step back and talk about the true foundation of skateboarding. You guessed it; it’s video parts.
Despite how divisive focusing on video parts can be, our PARTS segment is as straightforward as it gets: we get your favorite skaters to rant about vids they hated, loved, wish they had made, could watch on repeat forever, and so on. Essentially, it’s the stuff we all talk about when we’re at the park or sitting at a spot.
For our latest episode, we broke the mold a bit and hit up J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr. to give us some of his favorites. Obviously, J is no pro skater or even a big skate rat, but he’s played an important role in skate video history through his affiliations with Alien Workshop and skaters like Neil Blender.
We thought we’d go to the source and see what he thinks about his songs being used in random homie videos, the shoegaze and grunge nostalgia in skate vids today, and what the optimal skate part length is. While he didn’t give us a list like you’d usually find in our other episodes, hopefully, you can take something else away from his words (as few as they may be).
