Raising a family looks different for everyone. For some, it’s a life calling. Others, it’s a wake up call. Regardless of where you land on the scale when the water breaks, it’s time to get that ass in gear.
Darren Harpers’ ass is in gear.
Once known for his street lifestyle, insane pop and enigmatic personality that highlighted Washington D.C. and Freedom Plaza, Darren left the spotlight behind to embrace a job and kids. He has passed his love for skateboarding down to his daughters, and the spotlight is returning to the Harper family, only this time for his eldest two daughters Tink and Demi.
Darren is occupying the role of father, coach and mentor, hoping one day the girls will make a career out of skateboarding that lasts longer than his own. Because of this, we hopped on a bus a few weeks ago to get a better understanding of the family dynamic we’d been seeing blowing up over social media, and it didn’t take long to find Darren, the self proclaimed Obama of skateboarding, making his rounds at Freedom.
Enjoy our slice of life into the days of Darren and his daughters, one where we look at how being a father changed his life, the bright future he sees for his daughters, and the challenge of where to draw the line when pushing your own love of skateboarding on your kids.

Sorry to be a cunt, y’all, but the editor really needs to learn the difference between a plural and a possessive.

This is rad, but be careful loading a bunch of hopes and dreams onto your kids in case they change their minds and hang it up. Seen it too many times.
But this is still rad.

This is pretty sweet! I wish my daughter was a skater. Or my niece was a skater. That would be super rad!!! Besides the getting hurt part, skateboarding has always been a cool outlet for me. It kept me out of trouble, and partially in shape. Not to mention some of the kool people I’ve met over the years.
