For the last three years, I’ve had the same top artist on my Spotify Wrapped. Want to know who that is? It’s Florida born, Orlando skateboarding staple turned New York rapper Willie Wilson, aka 454.
454 has been dominating my headphones for some time now, and I have a feeling I’m not unique in that. His thoughtful wit and speedy vocals mix perfectly with what I can only describe as southern rap stylings infused with the reference point of a mid ‘00s skater who grew up in FL.
His breakthrough album 4 Real came in 2021, and since then he’s consistently dropped mixtapes and singles to keep his blossoming fanbase happy, most recently an hour-long tape Casts of a Dreamer and three singles, the standout being Beretta.
For Mix 146, take a peek into what 454 is listening to right now. From mid ‘00s Stereolab and Broadcast to hidden breakbeat gems, you quickly get a feel for the diverse inspirations that put Willie’s music in the undefinable realm it lives within.
